Assisting pet owners in tackling the underlying causes of their dog's behavioural concerns.
The best tool for behaviour problems is prevention. Training for a new puppy should begin at the time of adoption with puppy socialization and behaviour classes to shape a good canine citizen. An all-too-common reason for surrender of dogs to shelters is a problem behaviour. This is not a failure on the dog’s part.
If you have adopted a dog with an objectionable behaviour, there is help available, starting with your veterinarian and dog trainer. For more challenging behaviours, there are veterinarians who specialize in canine psychology that will accept referrals from private practitioners.
It starts with a comprehensive history of all aspects of your pet’s life and environment and the circumstances that trigger the behaviour. Your pet will then be examined by your veterinarian to screen for a health issue that may contribute to the problem; this may include diagnostic testing like blood work or x-ray.
You will need to contact your insurance provider.
Behaviour modification requires time, patience and positive reinforcement. Do not expect your problem to be solved overnight. Your veterinarian may recommend the use medications along with training exercises. Medications by themselves DO NOT solve behaviour problems.
