Nail Trimming and Ear Cleaning

Nail trims and ear cleanings are two very common things we do here in-clinic that owners can also do on their own at home. Though seemingly easy to some people, they are extremely important parts of a dog’s overall health. Without nail trims the nails can grow too long and cause extreme discomfort, sometimes even growing into the paw pad which causes pain and infection. Regular ear cleaning keeps the dog comfortable, as well as allowing the owner to spot signs of infection or abnormalities earlier.

How often should I cut my dog’s nails?

The frequency a dog should have its nails trimmed depends entirely on the dog. Some dogs need frequent nail trims, while others can go much longer in between trims. This all depends on the lifestyle, breed, and age of the dog. Active dogs will often wear their nails down well on their own, while inactive dogs may not. Elderly dogs may also favour walking on soft surfaces which will not wear the nails down as well. Generally, if you can hear the dog’s nails tapping on the floor while it is walking then the dog is due for a trim.

How often should my dog have their ears cleaned?

This depends entirely on the dog. Factors include breed and lifestyle. Dogs who swim or get their ears wet frequently may need more ear cleanings than others. Dogs with floppy ears also tend to have more ear issues than other breeds. For dogs with no known ear issues once a month is generally fine, while other dogs may need their ears cleaned up to twice a week. Your veterinarian can help you figure out what is best for your dog.
